One of the greatest lessons that I’ve learned in life is the lesson of setting my priorities.
Beyond that, it’s about understanding what my priorities are vs. the priorities of others and our society.
The greatest disappointments in my life come from the times when I try to attain goals that I’ve set based on another person’s priorities. I think learning our personal priorities in life and using those as a foundation upon which to build our goals is a monumental life changer.
My personal opinion is that priorities determine what we will be successful doing. If my honest set of priorities puts saving money at the bottom of the list and traveling at the top, then the likelihood that I will be successful with saving money is very low and the likelihood that I’ll apply my extra income to plane tickets or hotel fees is way up there.
This doesn’t mean that I will never learn to save money. It just means that I have to re-direct my priorities. Traveling has to move down and savings has to move up. Perhaps I remind myself that the more savings I have the easier it will be for me to travel in the future. Perhaps I need to sit down and daydream about everything that having a savings account will offer me.
So, what do we do with this?
First, it’s important to be honest with yourself.
What are your actual priorities right now?
Where are you spending your money, your time, your thoughts?
What do you day dream about?
NOT, what do you think is best for yourself or what you think your priorities should be.
Then, use that information and see if they align with your current goals.
From there make adjustments. Either, update your goals to match your priorities or do the work to figure out how to adjust your priorities.
